Everyone who knows me knows that I've been very engaged with this election. I feel very strongly about the candidates I prefer and the issues at hand, and have no intention of stepping back from observing and advocating for my point of view in this very heated campaign.
That said, I really am starting to feel a little bit burned out.
For instance, I just fired up my email for the first time in a couple of hours, and this is what I got:
1. Subject: Our Secret Weapon
All the recent polling has us surging. The other side is getting nervous.
So of course they'll be gearing up to spend millions more.
But it's not going to work any better than the $7.6 million they've already spent -- because our great online supporters won't back down. We fight harder. And we need to start by hitting this $300,000 goal in the next 32 hours...
2. Subject: Breaking: Polling Update
Donna — Today, there are 12 Senate races polling in the margin of error—and Democrats are projected to lose the Senate by a single seat...
And in 24 hours we face the final quarterly FEC deadline of this election. That’s why every dollar you contribute today will be matched 3-to-1, tripling the impact of your gift...
3. Subject: !!!
...Now we just have to close this $1.2 million spending gap before tomorrow’s big fundraising deadline. Will you help us out?
4. Subject: Super Awesome News
Dear MoveOn member,
I think we may have just discovered the silver bullet that could help us win the whole election...
The question is whether we can raise enough money in the next few days to roll it out nationally. If just 30,000 of us chip in, we can change the outcome of this election. Can you chip in?
5. Tomorrow's Deadline
...This year, California is a battleground state -- from the deceptive Koch Brothers-backed Prop 32 to the half dozen U.S. House seats throughout the state that we have a shot at picking up.
With your help, we can beat back the Republicans and special interests -- and win battles of our own...
6. No Subject
...Look, we're not going to outspend these guys on television. But what we can do is counteract their negative attacks with the generosity of grassroots supporters like you. And that's exactly what we need to do -- before the deadline less than 36 hours away.
7. Subject: The biggest deadline we've faced
(Note that this one purports to be from Michelle Obama)
...In almost no time at all, this race will be over.
One of the very last fundraising deadlines is coming up tomorrow, and the resources we have by then will help decide how this race turns out. Barack can't do this alone -- to win, he needs supporters like you who have been with him from the start giving it your all....
8. Subject: This is it
(Note: This one purports to be from Howard Dean)
We're facing our most critical fundraising deadline yet tomorrow at midnight -- the money we raise now will be used to get us through the final month of the election, and across the finish line on November 6th...
9. Subject: just got word
...two years after the Republican tsunami of shady Super PAC ads washed away Democrats, Karl Rove and the Republican outside groups are not going to give up. They're going all-in. Yesterday, we got word that one group is dumping $3.3 million in California to stop our candidates' momentum.
We don’t need to match them dollar-for-dollar but we have to raise $1.2 million more to close the spending gap before tomorrow’s FEC deadline.
THIS ISN'T EVEN ALL OF THEM, and doesn't include all the ones I deleted this morning.
Is it any wonder I'm feeling weary? (Not to mention afraid to peek at my IN box?)
And yes, I realize the irony at the fact that I've been sending my own political emails one or two times a week for the MOMocrats.
Right now, I can't wait for November 7th. And win or lose, I think I'm going to take a spa day.
