We had cool, gusty winds throughout most of the week, sweeping away all the smog and the haze and making the air crystal clear. It's days like this that I am struck by how beautiful our San Fernando Valley is, because I can actually see the mountains that rim around us in high definition. (They usually appear like big, brown, lumpy things silhouetted against the brown haze).
I'm midway through Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet -- again. You may recall that I'd lost 20 pounds on this program two years ago. And since then, I've gained back 30. I've had a lot of false starts, but this time (fingers crossed) I seem to be back in the groove.
So yesterday, when I realized I was out of the frozen breakfast goodies I had baked last week, I decided to treat myself to a meal out. I grabbed some magazines, dropped Megan off at school, and headed over to the only place around here that makes both a decent omelet and a good cup of coffee: Mimi's Cafe. I planned on enjoying a quiet meal by myself while reading -- but that plan was put on hold when I ran into my friend, Betty, in the parking lot. I haven't seen much of her since her younger daughter was accepted into the gifted magnet school, so I was happy to abandon my plan and accept Betty's invitation to join her and some other friends for breakfast.
I am pretty self-sufficient. I have never had a problem dining alone (a good thing as I was a single working woman from the age of 25 until I met Gareth at the age of 32). But I do enjoy a good old-fashioned female kaffeeklatsch, and I had a rollicking good time with the gals -- and my Tuscan omelet, no bread, no potatoes.
By the time our party broke up, it was already 10:00. I was in good spirits. The day was still gorgeous.
I decided to head over to Circuit City and buy the new digital camera I've been needed since my old one broke. A web search last month revealed them to have better prices on some models than Costco... and after all, this was a whim. No more researching, no more price comparisons... I was ready to BUY.
There were probably a couple of dozen different models in my price range. I quickly ruled most of them out: no viewfinder, not enough zoom, this one wouldn't take the 1G SD card I already owned...
So I ended up with this little beauty. I had considered it before and discarded the idea, because it takes AA batteries and from my experience, those would have to be replaced OFTEN. But it was the only other model that had everything else I wanted...
...so I got it and realized an advantage to the batteries: I was able to take a few shots IMMEDIATELY (without waiting for a proprietary battery to charge).
Of course, I was using the 16MB card that came with the camera, so I had to stop and go home. And by the time I was ready to leave the house again, the haze had returned.
But I was happy to declare that I'd had a Good Day.
We've had our Canon Powershot A75 for quite some time now and use Energizer Rechargeable batteries. They last a pretty long time before needing to be recharged and lord knows we've put that little camera through all kinds of hell.

You chose wisely. BTW, I get about 300 shots before running through my batteries on the S3IS, or about 30 minutes of 640 x 480 video. Either way, it's not as much as my Nikon can get on one charge, but more than enough for the camera I carry with me for the "shot I didn't want to miss". :)
Enjoy!
