Megan's Level 6 season ended on Sunday, with her competition in the state "Platinum" session for Level 6 gymnasts.
She performed well: An 8.825 on vault, 9.05 on bars, and 9.4 on both beam and floor. Her All Around score was 36.675.
She came in sixth place, which isn't bad -- the State competition is usually a heartbreaker, and her showing was respectable. More than respectable. She has a lot of reasons to feel proud.
It was her last competition at that level. Yesterday, she and her teammates officially joined the ranks of our team's optional gymnasts.
The optional levels are where these young gymnasts really come into their own, as they are expected to create their own routines that show off the skills they can do best (they have "options," as opposed to the lower "compulsory" levels, where they all perform the exact same routines).
The optional season starts in January. This doesn't give them a lot of time to come up with new choreography and perfect it.
So I wasn't all that surprised when her coach decided to let the girls sit out the season.
I WAS surprised to learn that she's going to have them train Levels 7, 8 AND 9... and she's thinking of having them SKIP 7 altogether.
Megan and her friends are excited over this prospect, but disappointed that they may have to wait another year before they compete. As stressful as these meets seem to me, these girls actually ENJOY them.
I'm hoping the coach changes her mind again -- at least, enough to let the girls participate in one of the meets scheduled for February. It's in Las Vegas, and we were all looking forward to going to that one!
In the meantime, it's fun to watch my daughter loving gymnastics again. This is a far cry to how she felt just a few short months ago, when she couldn't see beyond the goal of getting to Level 7. Her plan then was to do one season of optionals and quit.
She's not talking about quitting any more. I credit moving to the new gym for her happier attitude. As I said before, she just needed a change.
