She no longer lets me take the traditional first day of school photo... but it was still a morning filled with excited anticipation.
Adjusting to the early morning school schedule will not be easy after a summer of staying up late and sleeping until noon (!), but today, she was up on time and ready to go. She was even awake enough to actually talk to me on the drive to school. (This is in marked contrast to our usual morning ride, where both she and our carpool partner sit through the entire 20-minute trip in stony silence.)
Today, it was all wondering who would be in her homeroom, who would be in her other classes, and who would still be at the magnet. A new high school is opening up this year and several of her classmates had told her they were considering a transfer. The new school is on the traditional schedule, so she tells me a few kids going there have posted "Bwah-hah" messages on her Facebook wall.
"Next year, all the schools are supposed to start in August," I assure her. "So you can taunt them back when they have a short summer vacation."
We get to school in plenty of time before the bell. That was not the case last year, when I had not yet figured out the best route to take, or the best spot for drop off.
"And I was late, because I couldn't find H-Hall," she said. It was OK, because that's expected of Freshmen.
She knows the ropes now. She bounds out of the car, grabs her things and walks to the school.
And I drive back home.
I can't wait to hear how her day went.
another bittersweet Mom moment
