After viewing the x-rays of my immobilized right thumb, my doctor concluded that I didn't fracture the bone, after all.
But the fact that I have only 20% mobility in it (and pain) indicates that the damage may be to the tendon.
"Great," I said. "So what do we do now? Physical therapy?"
She shook her head. "If it is your tendon, I'll refer you to a surgeon who specializes in hands."
Surgeon. I don't like the sound of that.
She ordered an MRI so she can better see what's going on in there.
I asked her about the splint I've worn for the last six weeks. Theoretically. I suppose I can remove it - but when it's off, my thumb feels numb... Except when I move it in a manner that makes it hurt.
"Keep it on," she instructed. "And take ibuprofen. If it's inflamed, that could help."
As I mentioned before, I'm struggling with all kinds of packaging. So as I'm nearly out of Advil (having used a lot of the stuff this month, between the thumb and my poor burnt arm), I picked up a fresh bottle -- with the easy-open arthritis cap:
